Last week was awesome for Spider-Man fans! We’re just a little over a month away from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swinging onto the PS5, and we’re getting a better idea of what to expect on October 20th. Insomniac Games showed us some cool character posters that give us a closer look at the Super Hero and Super Villains in the game. About 24 hours ago, we got to see more of the expanded Marvel’s New York and some new Spidey suits in a State of Play presentation. And today, we’re diving deep into the game’s combat, activities, story, and more because we got to play a preview build of the game and chat with some of the key folks who worked on it – Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar, Senior Game Director Ryan Smith, and Senior Narrative Director Jon Paquette.
The gameplay we got to experience happened during a tense part of the story. It started with an intense showdown between Kraven and Spider-Man covered in symbiote. This is the same scene we saw in the gameplay reveal earlier this year. In between, there were wild science experiments, break-ins at community exhibitions that needed a Super Hero’s touch to solve, new challenges to try out Spider-Man’s Web Wings, crimes to stop, tough boss fights, funny moments, and fantastic character interactions.
Before the event, I went back and played the previous Spider-Man games to get back in the swing of things (pun intended) and better compare them to what I was about to experience. When I had to reluctantly put down my Dual Sense controller, my first impressions were really positive. Insomniac Games is doing an amazing job with this Super Hero sequel. It’s bigger, denser, and full of heart. Let me tell you why.

Spider man jokes: Even though the game has some serious stuff going on, there’s also a lot of humor and funny moments. For example, in a lab scene, there were several times that made me laugh out loud. Like when Harry was nervously saying “no black holes” as he started a particle accelerator, or when Peter whispered to a big, axe-wielding guy in a bearskin, “but I’ve got no honey,” before getting thrown through a window. The humor from Peter Parker is just right.
A Story with emotion: The actors in the game are doing a great job with their lines, especially when the story gets serious. You can really feel Kraven’s determination in the way Jim Pirri delivers his lines. And from what I’ve seen in the trailers, Tony Todd as Venom sounds really intense. During my preview, there was a touching scene where Miles is at his dad’s grave, and he says, “I’m Spider-Man – I can do everything myself.” Nadji Jeter’s performance made it a beautiful mix of strength, hope, and uncertainty. I’m not just excited to see what happens when they’re wearing their masks, but also to learn more about the characters behind those masks and see all the unexpected surprises in the story

The trailer introduces the game’s story and gives you a first look at the scary Venom in Marvel’s New York! Here’s Jon Paquette, Senior Narrative Director for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, to explain it further:
“At the beginning of our story, our Spider-Men are doing really well as superheroes,” Paquette said. “But both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are having a tough time in their personal lives. Miles is trying to write his college entrance essay, but he keeps getting distracted by his Spider duties. Meanwhile, Peter is struggling to make payments on Aunt May’s house, and he can’t bring himself to sell it because it means so much to him. Just like Miles, Peter is finding it hard to balance all his responsibilities. MJ wants to help Peter with the mortgage, but her job is in danger now that J. Jonah Jameson is back at the Bugle and making changes. Our heroes are facing a lot of challenges, and they have some difficult decisions to make.”
When Kraven’s hunters show up in the city, it triggers a mystery about why they’re there and who or what they’re hunting. But as the Spider-Men and MJ investigate Kraven’s motives, the symbiote starts to pose a threat to Marvel’s New York and everything and everyone they care about.
